SCBWI Illustrator's Intensive Assignment

One day, one illustration, one goal:  to help you make your dream project
a marketable reality.

Bring your dream picture book project: the one that's underway, almost there, or in your head and ready to hit paper.

ASSIGNMENT:  Complete two pages from your book, either a double page spread or two single page images.  Ideally, the rest of the book should be in dummy form with black and white comp drawings or shown in thumbnails.

During the workshop we'll focus on the very thing that editors look for: the Narrative Content in your work.  Your image should capture a pivotal moment in the story, one that elicits an emotional reaction from a viewer.  Harness the power of dynamic elements like scale, perspective, lighting, rhythm, pattern, texture, and color to make your work stand out.  This will be a roll-up-your-sleeves workshop designed to take your work to the next level and get it ready to submit to publishers.

The illustration:   Finished art for a double page spread or two single pages
Size of your choosing (but based on a standard trim size)
Any medium or style
Leave at least a 1 inch border around the illustration so that art may be handled
Show your main character.  If doing two single pages, show the character in both.

Please bring supporting materials: dummy, thumbnails, manuscript
