Intensives:Advice From A Caterpillar: Attend an Intensive, Friday, January 13th, 9am-4pm. Eat the mushroom. Attendance is limited to 25 people each at a cost of $165/ea (includes box lunch) but is a separate cost from the conference. Go away changed. Picture Book [click for more info]: Join Diane Muldrow, author-editor, Golden Books/Random House, and Janeen Mason, award winning author-illustrator, for a fast-paced day filled with exercises, tips and tools to Power up and Polish Your Picture Book. Learn to identify the force of a good story, the art of suspense and flow, and the magic of high visual interest. This intensive is designed to help you cultivate your best work and stand out. Leveled Readers/Early Chapter Books [click for more info]: Learn how to target audiences of young readers using engaging language, topics and formats. Expect to complete writing exercises and leave with greater understanding and effective writing tools for leveled readers. Presented by Bonnie Bader and Natalie Lescroart of Penguin Group (USA). Novel [click for more info]: Focus on how to make your novel more audience-oriented: What hooks readers? What makes them excited to turn the page? What makes them read till the end? We'll look at the difference between suspense and tension and how to use both. Bring scenes from a work in progress to revise using the techniques discussed. Presented by multi-talented author, Dorian Cirrone and über-enthusiastic agent, Marietta Zacker. |
| Book Sales: Speakers, Workshop Leaders, Critiquers, and SCBWI PAL members registered for the conference may sell their books through our on-site bookseller, Books & Books. Contact Laurie Taddonio at LTaddonio@mac.com by December 10th, 2011, with the name of your book and the ISBN. The Book Store will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Only PAL members and PAL books are eligible. |
| First-Page Critiques: Bring the First Page of your work-in-progress, 12-point type, 250 words or less, one page only. Write the title and genre at the top, but do not put your name on it. Panelists will read selections aloud and critique. Drop First Pages at the registration desk before 9 a.m.,
Saturday, January 14th. There is no charge. Submissions will be recycled afterwards. |

Note: Although a picture book may have fewer than ten pages, each different manuscript counts as a separate submission. DO NOT MAIL VIA A SERVICE THAT REQUIRES A SIGNATURE FOR DELIVERY! You will be notified in advance by email of the time and person providing your critique. We do NOT honor requests for specific critiquers. |
| Art & Portfolio Critiques: Do not send your work in advance; bring your art to the conference. Send in your payment for the critique with your conference registration form no later than: December 10th, 2011. |
| SCBWI-FL Commemorative Conference Pins: Add our Miami 2012 pin to your collection. Each pin is numbered. One lucky person will win a scholarship to one of our two conferences (you and the pin must be present to win). Proceeds from the sale of pins are used to fund this scholarship. |
| Portfolio & Art Exhibit: Illustrators, take advantage of the three feet of table space provided for you to exhibit your portfolio during the conference. Be sure to have plenty of handouts and any display props needed. Original art is not permitted, as SCBWI can’t be responsible for any loss or damage. | Book Basket: Bring a new book to put in our book basket. The books will be donated to The Pajama Program, www.pajamaprogram.org, who provides new pajamas and books to children in need - many of whom are waiting and hoping to be adopted. |
